How My Voiceover Journey Began

Here are some interesting facts about my voiceover journey for those who don't know me:

I'm a Bilingual 🇺🇸 English and 🇲🇽 Spanish voiceover actor. I began my voiceover journey in 2005. I booked my first VO job without knowing what voiceover was called or that it was an actual career/business.

I was led to believe early on that to have as much success, I would need to master marketing. Which wasn't 💯 true but I didn't know any better. Marketing was not an area of expertise I had at that time. I almost gave up pursuing voiceover because of this. Instead, I decided to get a job in Sales/Marketing. I ended up working with a company that helped business owners of all sizes grow their business. This paved the way in helping me learn how to help my own business in voiceover.

I had a tiny obstacle. 😆

My ex-husband. He didn't believe I could actually earn a living in voiceover. He thought it was a scam. 🤣  I can laugh about it now. He had zero desire for me to invest $3000 of "our" money for coaching and a demo. Yes, the prices have been that high since back then. The thing is that was just going to be one of the many obstacles I would have to overcome to find the success I eventually found in my career.

My other main obstacle at that time is that I didn't have a neutral General American accent for the main markets in the U.S. There was no "inclusive of all diverse actors" in auditions like we see today. That really has only come as part of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. In fact, I was told by a major LA coach I would never make it in the LA market without "neutralizing my accent". She wasn't wrong but it didn't help my confidence.

There also wasn't a strong Bilingual market like we see today. And while my Spanish is native and my first language, it had become my secondary language so I had to actually work on polishing it up to even book in the Spanish market.

I also lived in Chicago at that time and Chicago being the third major market is a Union town. Meaning if you're not in the Union (AFTRA at that time), you weren't accepted into any major talent agency. So in a sense the advice I received about marketing wasn't far off. This was also the time that online casting sites started with the two main players still at play today. There wasn't anyone selling how to make six figures on these sites back then either. So I went the marketing route.

I became an avid student of both business and voiceover. I have always had the balance of learning with top industry pros but also from business experts outside of voiceover. I have easily spent over $60k since then. Every single penny has been worth it as I've made my investment back and then some.

So here I am 17 years later...

As a SAG-AFTRA full-time voiceover actor in the LA market and beyond with a robust full-time career.

During the past 16 years, I have worked for various voiceover training companies in the roles of Business and Marketing to help them with my success strategies. I've taught introduction to Voiceover classes all over the United States. I've held endless webinars in voiceover training and coaching many talents to success.

In addition, I've also been sought out to do casting, voice directing and a plethora of voiceover job negotiations.

What I have achieved is a mastery of the many parts of running a successful voiceover business. After a very exhaustive and demanding recording schedule these past two years, where I had no time to do any of my normal business/marketing coaching, I realized my calling is more in those other roles than behind the microphone. After all that, that's what I've concluded. 😅

That's why I created Winning In Voiceover so that I can use all of my areas of expertise to help as many voiceover talents find the winning path for themselves in the way that is meaningful to them while avoiding the many pitfalls out there. If you find yourself in need of encouragement, support or success strategies that work, you've come to the right place.
